The employability and skills sector has changed many times over the past four decades, from funding models and reporting requirements to the way providers evidence outcomes, manage programmes and support learners, participants, employers and communities. Through all that change, CogniSoft has remained a constant in the sector as the longest-serving supplier of Learner Management and Case Management solutions.
That longevity is strengthened by the continuous leadership of Managing Director Emma Cook. In an industry where female leadership, especially with nearly four decades of tenure, remains exceptionally rare, Emma’s journey at CogniSoft stands out.
Many of our customers will know Emma, who first joined CogniSoft in 1988. This September marks 38 years since Emma joined the business, during which time she has seen the sector move through different governments, changing policies, new delivery models, new technologies and new expectations of providers. Emma became a Director of CogniSoft in 2000 and has led the organisation as Managing Director since 2020, bringing almost 40 years of sector knowledge into the way the business continues to develop, support customers and plan for the future.
For customers, that continuity provides stability in a very practical sense. It means CogniSoft’s software and support have not been shaped by short-term changes in direction, but by long-standing knowledge of how the sector works, how providers operate and what they need from their systems every day. It also means decisions about the service and the future of the business are guided by people who understand the history of the sector as well as the challenges providers are facing now.
Earlier this year, Emma was recognised with the Impact Award at the Apprenticeships & Skills Group Conferences Sector Awards. It was a proud moment for Emma and the wider CogniSoft team, and a powerful reminder of what long-term female leadership in tech looks like. Across the technology sector, women occupy only around 25% of leadership positions. To navigate four decades of sector change from the ground up to the helm of a software business makes Emma’s impact all the more significant.

Continuity Across the CogniSoft Team
The same sense of continuity can also be seen across the wider CogniSoft team, with many colleagues enjoying over 20 years’ service, ranging through to others joining in more recent years. This depth of experience gives customers stability, while working alongside the fresh ideas and new thinking that continue to move the business forward.
We are proud of the knowledge built over many years, but longevity has never meant standing still. It means carrying forward the understanding, relationships and values that matter, while continuing to improve the software and support we provide.
The employability and skills sector will continue to change, as it always has. Our role is to keep listening, keep developing and keep supporting customers with software shaped by experience, understanding and partnership.
